On 22-23 March, a delegation headed by the Mayor of Ukmergė District Municipality Rolandas Janickas visited Vydminai (Widminnen) district, Poland.
The main purpose of the visit was to discuss and sign a Memorandum of Intent on cooperation.
The Mayor was accompanied by Lolita Gerulskienė, Deputy Head of the Education, Culture and Sports Department, Linas Rugienius, Chief Specialist of the Strategic Planning, Investment and Business Development Department, and Chrisija Kvietkauskienė, Chief Specialist of the Information Technology and Public Relations Department, who travelled to Poland.
"I hope that our beautiful friendship with Vydminai municipality will only grow stronger in the future, and that the sharing of best practices will be beneficial for both of us," said R. Janickas.
The Ukmergė delegation was warmly welcomed and accompanied on both days of the visit by the Mayor of Vydminai, Radosław Król, Deputy Mayor Andrzej Ciesluk, the Chairman of the Council of the Vydminai Municipality, Waldemar Samborski, and other municipal staff.
On the arrival day, a meeting was held at the Vydminai Municipality building, where the Vydminai district, the structure of the municipality, the services it provides, the prospects for the development of the town's infrastructure, and the projects planned for the town's future were presented in detail. Ukmergė municipality members also made a presentation of Ukmergė town.
The terms of the envisaged Memorandum of Intent on cooperation and the mutual benefits of international cooperation were further discussed.
On the next day, the delegation visited the Social Assistance, Community Services, Culture and Activity Centres, as well as the Volunteer Fire Brigade. Later, they watched a musical performance by secondary school students and senior citizens' ensembles.
The visit was culminated by the signing of the Memorandum of Intent on cooperation between the Mayor of Ukmergė District Municipality R. Janickas and the Mayor of Vydminai Municipality R. Król, which was also attended by the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Lithuania, Stefan Duk, and the Mayor of the neighbouring district of Vydminai- Dobre Miasto, Jarosław Kowalski.
Joint activities and exchange of good practices will take place in the fields of local government administration, education and culture, economic promotion, social inclusion, exchanges between public bodies and non-governmental organisations, public security, training and seminars.
International relations and cooperation provide excellent opportunities for enhancing local awareness, exchanging best practices and experiences between the two municipalities, and it is therefore planned to establish an official partnership with Vydminai in the future, subject to the approval of the municipalities' representative bodies (Councils).
Before leaving, the delegation from Ukmergė, together with the aforementioned leaders, observed a minute of silence in honour of the soldiers who were members of the Third Vilnius Brigade of the National Military Union, and who are buried in the Pantheon of the Indomitable Soldiers in the Orlov Village Cemetery.
