On the 26-29 of May Polish town of Tarnowo Podgórne held local self-government days and invited representatives of the Ukmergė District Municipality.
A delegation of members of Ukmergė District Municipality Council Angelė Jokubynienė and Kazys Grybauskas together with a chief specialist of the Strategic Planning, Investments and Business Development Department Linas Rugienius went to Poland.
The opening of the Civic Integration Centre in Przeźmierowo took place during the celebration. This centre belongs to Tarnowo Podgórne community and is a meeting place for Przeźmierowo village council, seniors’ club, local groups, and non-governmental organizations. Tarnowo Podgórne transferred its municipal office department and a police station to Przeźmierowo. During the opening of the building, a conference was held to celebrate the self-government days. The Mayor Tadeusz Chaika gave a welcome speech, introduced his municipality, a professor of history was invited and gave a lecture on the historical significance of self-government.
Delegates from Ukmergė participated in many events in Tarnovo Podgorne: the opening of the celebration and the procession, they watched the performances, listened to songs performed by “Sezam”, “Tuga”, “Melosik Sisters” and Grzegorz Hyzy, admired the laser show. Delegates also presented our country and municipality to the residents and guests of this town, discussed current topics together with representatives of partner towns of Tarnowo Podgórne.
Representatives of the Ukmergė District Municipality brought the production of “Ukmergė bread”, which has become the pride of our town, as a gift to a long-time partner town in Poland. They also gave hosts of the celebration the book “10 small towns of Ukmergė region” published by the publication design studio “Kopa”.
Delegations from the towns of Szemud, Czorsztyn and Bardo (Poland), Šalčininkai (Lithuania) and Livani (Latvia) took part in the celebration. The latter town also cooperates with Ukmergė District Municipality.
Ukmergė District Municipality signed a Cooperation agreement with Tarnowo Podgórne in 1999. Both sides mediate in maintaining relations between interested partners and share experience at the municipal level. Delegations of countries are exchanged every year.
